Confirmed tornadoes were reported in Illinois and Iowa on Wednesday evening as severe weather swept across the Midwest.
According to the National Weather Service, a tornado touched down near Harpers Ferry, Iowa, at 5:10 p.m.

The tornadoes caused extensive damage in Charleston, Illinois, and surrounding areas, with reports of overturned semitrucks, damaged homes, and blocked roadways. Tens of thousands of residents in Illinois were left without power. In Effingham County, Illinois, a tornado traveled 12-15 miles, causing injuries and significant damage to residences, businesses, and farms. While most injuries were minor, the potential for life-threatening situations was high due to the intensity of the storms. The National Weather Service also issued flood alerts for Gulf Coast states due to Tropical Storm Arthur, compounding risks in the region.
